SUCCESS FOR VARIETIES MEANS WIDER CHOICE FOR MALTING BARLEY GROWERS

Picture shows Nickerson barley breeder Mark Glew with the company’s varieties on the newly-updated IBD (Institute of Brewing and Distilling) Approved List for harvest 2008.

The winter variety Cassata has been fast-tracked to Provisional Approval 2 for brewing use and the spring variety Appaloosa now has Full Approval for malt distilling use.

"Cassata is as farmer-friendly as Pearl but higher-yielding and an agronomically stronger variety. In particular, it is stiffer-strawed than Pearl,” commented Mr Glew.

Also, it’s a major plus for many growers that Cassata is resistant to barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) and to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) strain1” he added.

“Our other success is with Appaloosa which has passed the final hurdle and moved to full approval for malt distilling.  It is the highest-yielding distilling variety that farmers can grow, and an ideal complement to its popular stablemate Oxbridge,” concluded Mr Glew.
