BLUE PEA ZEROES IN ON EARLY HARVEST SLOT

An early harvest and a yield of 3.7t/ha in a season where many combining pea crops have performed poorly means Hertfordshire farmer Robert Law, of Thrift Farm near Royston, was particularly pleased with this harvest’s crop of Zero4 combining peas on his 1,200ha unit.

Mr Law grew 96ha of Zero4, an early blue variety, for the first time this year, and chose the variety chiefly because of its early-maturing characteristics.

“Although most crops were ready to harvest later than usual this season, because of the poor summer weather, the Zero4 was still fit to cut before our wheat, in the first few days of August,” he says. “It was also very easy to harvest; we combined the whole crop in just two-and-a-half days.
