TOP QUALITY MAIZE SILAGE HELPS BRING DOUBLE GOLD-MEDAL AWARD TO LINCS CHEESE MAKER
Michael Davenport of Cote Hill Farm in Lincolnshire and Alastair Moore of Nickerson Direct check on the maize silage that is the starting point of the farm’s award-winning cheese-making business using milk produced by their pedigree Holstein/Fresian cows.
“We feed the maize 50/50 with grass silage and it is important to us that the quality is consistent. For that we rely on the maize variety Nescio - I have tried others but I keep coming back to Nescio. If you’ve got a variety that works well for you, my experience is to stick with it.”
Michael and Mary Davenport have been farming and milking cows for 30 years and started making cheese at Cote Hill in 2005. The high quality unpasteurised milk, rich in butterfat and protein, gives their hand-crafted cheeses the unique flavour that has brought ‘Cote Hill Blue’ a Gold Medal at the British Cheese Awards two years running.
Alastair Moore of Nickerson Direct, confirmed this: “Nescio performed consistently in a challenging year and has once again proved its worth as a reliable high yielding variety that produces the highest total energy output of any in the UK.”
