SEED SPECIALIST CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF ADVISING FARMERS IN SCOTLAND
Nick Wallace, Regional Manager in Scotland for Nickerson Direct, which supplies seeds directly from the breeder to the farmer, is celebrating 30 years with the company.
On leaving school in 1979 at the age of 17 Nick joined leading seed breeding company Milne Masters as Assistant Area Manager in Perthshire and was subsequently appointed as Area Manager. When Nickerson took over Milne Masters in the 1980s Nick continued to serve existing customers in Perthshire and extended his involvement to the north east into Angus. Three years ago when George Blyth (Nickerson Direct’s former Regional Manager) retired, Nick was again promoted. In addition to responsibility for his own territory, which extends from Perthshire to Aberdeenshire, Nick also manages the company’s team of on-farm Seed Specialists who advise farmers throughout Scotland. He comments:
“Farming profitably demands the very best inputs to achieve high outputs. Growers who consistently achieve good results recognise the value of investing in quality seeds. While other companies increasingly rely on selling to farmers over the ‘phone or via the internet, Nickerson Direct Seed Specialists advise farmers face-to-face on all aspects of our range, which includes Original cereal seeds, Circle Ley grass mixtures, oilseeds, LG maize, pulses and Foundation potatoes, together with a number of complimentary products. Because Nickerson Direct specialises in supplying seeds, customers can be assured that the products which they purchase from us are of the highest quality, with the purity and vigour necessary to deliver consistent, high performance.”
During his 30 years in the seed trade Nick has dealt with up to three generations of some farming families and as a measure of his professionalism was voted ‘Agricultural Seed Trade Representative of the Year’ for Scotland in 1999. Nick has also judged the cereal plots at the Scottish Winter Fair and was invited by the Fife Agricultural Association to judge standing crops for its 2009 cereals competition.
Nick and his wife live at Alyth in Perthshire and have one daughter, Rachael, who has just started at nearby Dundee University. A keen golfer, for the last 14 years Nick has hosted the annual Nickerson Direct Golfing Day for farmers from all over Scotland.
