APPALOOSA is a very high yielding spring malting variety that has performed especially well in the HGCA Northern and Eastern regions. It has moderately tall, stiff straw and good mildew resistance. Appaloosa's grain quality make it attractive to the malt distilling industry, particularly because of its very low  glycosodic nitrile (GN) content and low grain nitrogen content. Appaloosa is now fully approved by the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) for distilling.

Breeder: Nickerson

Official Trials Status: HGCA (North East), SAC and DANI Recommended Lists. Institute of Brewing and Distilling full approval for distilling.

Appaloosa has characteristics that render it highly attractive to the Scottish malt distilling industry, with a similar hot water exract (HWE) to Optic and a low glycosidic nitrile (GN) content. Initial evaluation suggests that Appaloosa accumulates grain nitrogen at a low level, like Optic, and has a lower grain nitrogen content.

Appaloosa has successfully completed micromalting trials and is now fully approved for distilling use by the IBD.
