Growing your own forage crop for your livestock smallholding can have many benefits; you get full traceability, and reducing your reliance on bought-in feed can improve your profitability – to name a few!
Kale is a spring sown crop. It produces high yields of feed for sheep, dairy and beef cattle. Kale is economical to grow and produces good results, when given plenty of organic material e.g. slurry or farmyard manure.
Kale can produce 60-70 tonnes of fresh feed per hectare. It has an excellent crude protein content – essential for animal nutrition. The crop can be fed fresh by strip or zero grazing using electric fencing, a forage box or barrier.
Grampian is a highly digestible kale for autumn or winter use by sheep and dairy cows. UK proven, it has very high dry matter yields, leading to increased intakes by the animal. Grampian also has some clubroot tolerance, reducing the potential impact of this disease threat.
Grampian is also suitable for outwintering systems for cattle.
