Growing your own forage crop for your livestock smallholding can have many benefits; you get full traceability, and reducing your reliance on bought-in feed can improve your profitability – to name a few!
Kale is a spring sown crop. It produces high yields of feed for sheep, dairy and beef cattle. Kale is economical to grow and produces good results, when given plenty of organic material e.g. slurry or farmyard manure.
Kale can produce 60-70 tonnes of fresh feed per hectare. It has an excellent crude protein content – essential for animal nutrition. It can be fed fresh by strip or zero grazing using electric fencing, a forage box or barrier. Kale is also suitable for outwintering cattle.
Keeper is a short, leafy forage kale that is ideal for sheep production. It is medium/short and has good lodging resistance, so the crop stays standing. It is very winter hardy, so it can withstand harsh weather conditions.
UK proven, Keeper kale has flexible use for finishing lambs for market and for providing high quality winter keep.
It has low SMCO levels, which are anti-nutritional chemicals.
